One of Australia’s brightest young judo stars has the chance to win a major award after claiming multiple state and national titles in 2022.
12-year-old Charles Campbell College student Tom Brunet-Greseque is fast rising up the ranks of Australian martial artists and has been nominated for the primary section of The Advertiser, Messenger and Department for Education School Sports Awards 2022.
Brunet-Greseque said he was proud to be nominated for a second time.
“Getting nominated again this year is an amazing opportunity,” Brunet-Greseque said.
“It makes me very proud and winning would be an outstanding achievement for me.”
Brunet-Greseque – who started judo at four years old and trains at the Adelaide Uni Judo Club – has represented SA in national tournaments throughout the last two years and come away with multiple gold medals.
Just through 2022, Brunet-Greseque won seven gold medals in various weight classes at state and national level, most notably winning gold in the U40kg section of the 2022 Judo Australia National School Championships in the Gold Coast.
He has now been accepted by Maribyrnong College’s sports academy for 2023.
“Nationals was such an amazing experience and winning was a very special moment for me,” Brunet-Greseque said.
“The atmosphere was amazing and it was my second national title in a row which made me proud but also grateful for all the people who have helped me.
“My school and club have both helped me massively through my development in judo and I’m seeing the results. I’ve learned how to stay calm when chasing my dreams and to give my best in everything I do.”
While Brunet-Greseque currently sits among the nation’s top young martial artists, he believed the hard work had just begun.
“It feels great to have already achieved a lot of my goals but I’ve got to keep working very hard to continue achieving what I want to.”
The School Sports Awards are the joint initiative of The Advertiser, Messenger and Department for Education.
There are three major awards in 2022 – individual competitors, individual student officials, and teams, with female and male, and primary and secondary categories all included.
Enrolled primary or secondary students between the ages of 10-18 are eligible.
