A timely Ryan Gibson innings and a Jordan Buckingham four-wicket-haul saw West Torrens win the SACA Premier Cricket one-day cup by 17 runs over a resilient Glenelg.

The game went to the death, with Glenelg almost chasing down West Torrens’ 232-run total on Sunday.

While captain Jake Winter put together a stunning 105-run innings for the Seahorses, it was Buckingham who had the last laugh.

The talented bowler took four for 27 runs, including two important late wickets of Winter and Damon Kerr, sealing the win for his side.

Eagles coach Mark Harrity was relieved to have won yet another close matchup with Glenelg.

“We always come down to the wire with Glenelg. Both teams are really strong so it feels great to get this one,” Harrity said.

“I’m really happy with the performance, especially Jordan (Buckingham).

“He’s just got better and better as he’s gone. He’s had to step up and be our number one attacking option at times and the way he’s gone about it has been excellent.”

With the Eagles selecting the bat first, it was the Seahorses who started fastest – Liam Thompson and Liam Scott bowling brilliantly to have West Torrens at 4/70 early.

Harrity admitted he was worried but said performances of Gibson (75 runs) and Warren Peters (35 runs) were integral to putting up a total.

“I probably thought I got it wrong with the toss for a bit there. They bowled really well,” he said.

“Luckily Gibbo and Peters both came in and fought really hard to set us up heading into Glenelg’s innings.”

Harrity was also full of praise for captain Daniel Drew, who led his side to the win just days after scoring a big tonne for South Australia against Victoria.

“He’s a fighter. He missed out with the bat but his captaincy was outstanding. He’s had a massive few days and it’s a testament to him,” he said.

Glenelg was in a strong position with 15 overs left – sitting just 60 runs behind with Winter in excellent form.

While West Torrens managed to turn it around through Buckingham and hold the Seahorses to 215 runs, coach Sam McNally was happy with his team’s efforts.

“I’m really proud of the boys, chasing runs is never easy and they fought hard,” McNally said.

“I loved our bowling, and I have so much respect for Jake (Winter). He wasn’t in his best form with the bat but stood up as he has all year and made a great century. We’re blessed to have him as our leader.”

McNally said Glenelg’s focus was now on winning their remaining two-day matches and playing finals.

“We can definitely bounce back. We’re a top quality side and we expect to do well in every comp, this result won’t change that.”
