The top tier’s penultimate round was full of twists and turns, including a huge upset by Port District in its clash with Brighton at Largs Reserve.

The Bombers, fresh from the bye, entered the game in top place and the Magpies were fourth.

But the hosts produced a huge second quarter, which helped set up the 15.12 (103) to 8.9 (5) victory.

Jack Foster starred up forward for the Magpies, booted four goals.

Cooper Gaffney, Zac Hawkins, Luke McInerney and Daniel Passaniti were also strong for Port District.

Jacob Hughes was the hosts’ top goal kicker, finishing the game with five, while Anthony Dempsey and Tom Anderson kicked three.

Goodwood Saints coach Luke Donaldson said his side had come along way after sitting in seventh spot just three weeks ago.

“We weren’t happy with how we started the year but we felt, like a lot of teams, on our day we can beat anyone,” Donaldson said.

“I think we’ve been able to string together some really strong performances now which has been good.

“I think our intensity around the footy (against the Jets) was really good.

“The pressure we were able to put on the opposition to win the ball back was really strong.

“Certainly early we didn’t execute well but we executed a lot better after quarter-time which was a great result.”

Reining premier Payneham Norwood Union recorded a 10-point victory over Adelaide University away.

But the Falcons remain in seventh spot on the ladder with a 4-4 record and look unlikely to earn a finals berth this year.

“The boys played really well and kept at it.

“The league would be loving this final round.

“About four or five teams can still make it and some can even miss out, including us.

“It could come down to who has the fittest list.
