Ben Sawford joins Payneham Norwood Union after SANFL career with Port Adelaide, Glenelg and South Adelaide

After signing one SANFL star two weeks ago a division one Adelaide Footy League club has locked in the signature of another to bolster its 2022 premiership push.

PNU downs Goodwood to book grand final spot

Division one Adelaide Footy League club Payneham Norwood Union has landed the signature of former SANFL midfielder Ben Sawford two weeks after signing Brad McKenzie from Norwood.

The 27-year-old star, who played for Port Adelaide, Glenelg and South Adelaide, joins after an intense and injury-riddled season at the Panthers.

The opportunity to head to PNU with good mates Callum Bartlett and Lewis Klemm, and join McKenzie, was too hard for Sawford to refuse.

“I’ve been discussing the culture of Payneham Norwood Union a lot. Those guys just have a lot of fun with their footy and they’re also striving for success,” Sawford said.

“Obviously the club went one short last season but they’ve added a player like Brad McKenzie, who is a star to the mix so to join and maintain that culture and success, it’s a really appealing situation for me.”

Sawford, who has had multiple injury issues in recent years from shoulders to hamstrings, had his 2021 season curtailed with more issues.

He was impressive when in South Adelaide’s league side however, and will be looking to continue a high level of performance for PNU.

“My life’s getting a bit busier with work and I’m starting to get older as well. I’ve also had a few injuries so I just wanted to take a step away from the SANFL,” Sawford said.

“I’m hoping to stay fit and play well consistently for the club, and I just want to get back to enjoying my footy again.”

PNU had an impressive season in 2021, dominating most games and giving itself a shot at the ultimate success in the grand final.

While it fell short to the Jack Trengove-led Prince Alfred Old Collegians, Sawford believed the club had what it takes to go all the way in 2022 – especially with its new signings.

“I think I can be a big addition to the side. Hopefully I can bring that experience and depth throughout the midfield and add to the culture the club has already built off the field,” he said.

“The objective is certainly a flag and the club is really heading toward some success so hopefully we can go one better next year.”

Sawford also said he was grateful for his time at Port Adelaide, Glenelg and finally South Adelaide.
