Adelaide Footy League: Salisbury North’s Travis McIntyre boots dramatic last-second goal to beat Athelstone

An Adelaide Footy League star kicked his division-two club to an upset win – and out of the relegation zone – in the game’s dying seconds.

Salisbury North defeats Athelstone on the siren

An Adelaide Footy League midfielder stepped up to the plate in the dying seconds and pulled his underdog club out of the relegation zone with a thrilling goal on the siren over the weekend.

It had been a challenging month for Travis McIntyre’s Salisbury North side, the Hawks losing to Sacred Heart OC and PHOS Camden by a point each as they faced a challenge to escape relegation from division two.

The club seemed set for another devastating defeat when it trailed third placed Athelstone by two points with just seconds remaining away from home, but McIntyre would change the season’s landscape with one kick.

The Hawks launched one last attack deep in the final term and managed to win a free kick for a high tackle inside the forward 50, McIntyre emerging with the footy.

With anxious players and supporters watching on, the cool, calm and collected midfielder went back and casually booted the winning goal, the siren then sounding and sending Salisbury North players and fans into pandemonium.

“It was really special, I probably only average 10 to 15 goals a season so this one is a huge highlight for me,” McIntyre said.

“All I could think about when I went back was how important it was that I slot it home, and thankfully I did.”

The upset was Salisbury North’s most important win of the season, the club jumping up to seventh on the ladder and sitting outside of relegation on percentage.

McIntyre said the celebrations after the game were overdue.

“Having the boys all rush to me and jump on me was surreal, it was the biggest rush and personally not having experienced a senior flag, I think this would come close,” he said.

“The win was pivotal for us having lost the last two games by a point.

“We just hadn’t had the reward for effort and we’re now hoping we’ve started a bit of a winning trend and we can see the Hawks higher up the ladder where we belong.”

The matchups don’t get any easier for the Hawks, with top side Broadview up next.

The club will need to win as many of its remaining games as possible to stay up.

“The next two months for us are huge, big games are coming up but the standard we have shown recently is where I see us heading as a team,” McIntyre said.

“We can definitely stay up – on our day I believe we can beat anyone.”
