An altercation between a player and fan has seen a local SA footy game abandoned to mark the start of round seven.
The Adelaide Footy League is investigating a physical altercation between Scotch OC leading goalkicker Max Marslen and a Pembroke OS spectator which occurred during the division three A Grade game between the two clubs on Friday night.
The incident took place during the fourth quarter of the clash at Coopers stadium, with the 27-year-old forward and the fan engaging in a scuffle on the boundary.
Players from both sides worked to break up the scuffle after just a few seconds.
Marslen, a former West Adelaide player who kicked four goals in five SANFL League games for the Bloods, was shown a red card as a result of the incident and the game was then called early.
Pembroke OS led the affair 14.14 (98) to 1.5 (11) at the time of abandonment and will receive the two premiership points for a win.
AdFL chief John Kernahan said the league would conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
“The league will investigate this matter as it does with any incident, on or off field,” Kernahan said.
“Needless to say, no stone will be left unturned as to how a match was, in the opinion of an umpire, required to be abandoned.”
Scotch OC Football Club president Nick Fuss and Pembroke Old Scholars Football Club president Kathy Carruthers both told this masthead their clubs would co-operate fully with the league’s investigation into Friday night’s incident.
Kernahan said both clubs had helped the league greatly with its investigation so far.
“Both clubs have been first class in assisting the league in establishing the relevant information including, and crucially, identifying the spectators involved,” he said.
The two clubs had not met in the Adelaide Footy League since 2018 until last season after Pembroke OS earned promotion to division three at the end of 2022.
Each side grabbed a win each during the 2023 season, with the Kings finishing fifth on the ladder, just one premiership point above Scotch OC to make finals.
Friday night’s clash was the first meeting between the two sides this year, with Pembroke OS dominating from the outset behind a five-goal performance by Nick Dinham.
The Kings have moved in to the top five on the ladder after Friday night’s result, while Scotch OC sits in eighth, just above the relegation zone.
They will meet again in round 16.
SA Police confirmed no report regarding the incident had been made.
