Another entertaining round of local SA footy is over as star players continue to produce for their sides around the state.
From big individual performances to huge margins and thrilling wins, here are the 10 things we learned across country and suburban competitions.
DITTERS BOUNCE BACK
Port District bounced back from a big Anzac Day loss to div one leader Glenunga to claim a convincing 17.4 (106) to 8.5 (53) win over reigning premier Prince Alfred OC away from home.
The side was without star recruit Scott Lycett for the affair but still dominated from start to finish with signings Matt Rose and Joey Haines impressing throughout the four quarters.
Rose and Haines were both impressive on and behind the ball while Sam Gray was also highly impactful.
District held the Reds to a two goal second term while adding seven of their own to open the game up.
TIGERS SHOW TOUGHNESS
Broadview made it two wins on the trot on Saturday, defeating Golden Grove 10.17 (77) to 10.9 (69) at Harpers Field.
It was a full team effort by the Tigers who trailed 33-17 at quarter time but managed to claw their way back in the game and take a four-point lead at the final change.
Cooper O’Leary was a standout in the contest for the visitors, while Gibson Turner and Johnny Boras were again impactful up front.
The win sees Broadview move out of the relegation zone.
REDS READY TO COMPETE
Flinders Park recorded its third consecutive win in division two with an impressive victory over Goodwood at home, the Reds coming away 9.7 (61) to 6.8 (44) winners.
Macx Teague had three goals for the hosts as they kicked four majors to two in the final term to seal the win.
James Schwarz and Ethan Abbott were also influential with their ability to win the footy in the air and at ground level.
Many might have doubted the Reds’ credentials after their round one loss to Adelaide Uni but they now look like the side which won division three last season.
KOOKABURRAS FLY TO UPSET
Kenilworth tallied its best win of the season so far on Saturday with an 8.10 (58) to 7.10 (52) victory over Plympton at home.
The Kookaburras got the jump on the Bulldogs in the first half to lead 6.6 (42) to 2.7 (19) at the main break and managed to hang tough as the visitors charged back late with four goals to none in the final term.
Jordan Wilson-King and Sam Scott, who was also named best on ground, booted two each for the hosts in the win to lead their side to a top three spot.
FITZROY ADDS TO EAGLE WOES
Fitzroy notched up a historic Adelaide Footy League win in division six, defeating Elizabeth by a record score of 516-0 away from home.
The Lions were relentless in the contest from start to finish, with midfielder Dylan Richards booting 13 goals, James Ellis tallying 17 and key forward adding a huge 29, the biggest individual return since Hope Valley’s Darren Mitchell booted 32.
The loss is the biggest for bottom side Elizabeth so far this season, the Eagles only being able to field one side for the 2024 season.
LIONS ROARING IN DIV SEVEN
OSB Lonsdale has made it four consecutive wins to begin the 2024 season, topping Mawson Lakes 15.18 (108) to 9.8 (62) away from home to remain on top of the division seven ladder.
Star veteran forward and local SA footy icon Trevor Rigney was again one of the main contributors for the Lions, booting four goals and setting up a number of others, while Austinn Wurst and Damon Graham also had eight between them.
The side has looked too tough to beat so far this year but will need to be at its best against second spot Para Hills next weekend.
MAGPIES OFF TO FLYER
Hahndorf remained undefeated to start the Hills Football League season, beating contender Mount Lofty 16.12 (108) to 11.7 (73) at German Arms Oval on Saturday.
Star recruit Riley Clamp was at his best up front, booting six goals as the Magpies flew to a 60-31 halftime lead and never looked back.
Joel and Zabien Parker-Boers were also at their best through the midfield.
The Magpies look to have bounced back from their 2023 grand final loss to Nairne Bremer and are the team to beat again this year.
EAGLES SOARING IN SOUTH EAST
Hatherleigh continued its dominant start to the Mid South Eastern FL season with a big 21.24 (150) to 5.7 (37) win over Nangwarry at home.
The Eagles have been the top side in the early going this season and never looked like dropping off after building a 38-8 lead at quarter time.
Jase Bateman booted eight goals for the hosts after kicking just one in his first three games, while Darcy Bateman was named best on ground for his work in the contest and behind the ball.
ROOS RECORD HISTORIC WIN
Victor Harbor continued its brilliant start to the 2024 Great Southern Football League season with one of the biggest wins the competition has seen, defeating Goolwa-Port Elliot 50.29 (329) to 1.
The Roos were far too good from start to finish and didn’t let up, winning countless midfield contests and setting up their forwards as Sam Basham (10 goals), Michael Ross (eight goals) and Harry Vincent (11 goals) booted 26 goals between them.
The thrashing sees the side increase its percentage at the top of the ladder to a whopping 82.51.
BEARD, LOCK UP TO CHALLENGE
Kory Beard has continued his run as one of local SA footy’s top players with a dominant six-goal performance for Lock in the Roos’ 21.13 (139) to 3.5 (23) win over Cummins Kapinnie in the Great Flinders Football League.
The side fell just short of success last season but should be a big chance at going deep in finals this year behind Beard as playing-coach.
The dominant utility produced in a number of roles on Saturday and will be one to watch throughout the season.
