A division one Adelaide Footy League power took top spot for the first time this season after defeating the competition’s in-form side. Here’s our local footy wrap.

The local SA footy season got back underway after last week’s bye round and star players around the state strutted their stuff as teams continue to battle for finals spots.

There was plenty of wet weather footy as players battled heavy rain and winds to earn important premiership points.

Here are the 10 things we learned from the weekend’s action.

PITT’S PRINCES CREAM OF THE CROP

weather 8.3 (51) to 6.5 (41), moving clear in first position on the division one ladder as a result.

The Old Reds took control of the game early at home and managed to hang on to their lead, with backman Chris Curran and midfielder Jack Trengove dictating the play and Pitt winning contested ball and leading well while up front.

Pitt kept the elite Rams defence on their toes throughout the game as a forward, while Jayden Davis was also dangerous up front, creating multiple scoring opportunities.

PAOC will face a challenge in Tea Tree Gully away from home next week as it aims to consolidate its top spot advantage.

BOMBERS KEEP FINALS CHALLENGE ALIVE

Brighton kept itself in finals discussion this division one season with a dramatic 10.8 (68) to 9.9 (63) win over Tea Tree Gully at home in tough conditions.

Former Geelong player and Encounter Bay star Jake Tarca made his debut for the Bombers and booted four goals, including a major from 40 metres out with a minute left, to give his new side the integral win.

Captain Otis Carthy was also inspirational for the hosts, battling hard on the ball and across the backline.

The win ensured the Bombers stayed in touch with the top five.

MAGPIES KEEP FLYING

Port District survived a surprise scare from Goodwood Saints to move into division one’s top two, defeating the visitors 5.11 (41) to 5.5 (35) in an arm wrestle.

Preston Cockatoo-Collins was influential up front for the Magpies, booting two in the low-scoring affair, while former Power gun Sam Gray was at his best up front and in the contest, winning his fair share of footy and also hitting the scoreboard for an important major.

The win marks five straight victories for the reigning premier, the side finding its mojo after a slow start to the season.

RAGGIES BOUNCE BACK

Athelstone responded after a tough loss to Henley in round seven, defeating Adelaide Uni away from home in an almost flawless display, topping the Blacks 8.14 (62) to 5.3 (33).

The visitors led from the outset and gained full control in the final term after building a 13-point lead at the final break, holding the hosts scoreless and kicking two goals to seal the result.

Vice-captain Mitch Grigg was important through the middle, while captain Luke Rander led by example as a key option up front.

SCOTCH NO LONGER ON THE ROCKS

Scotch Old Collegians achieved a major upset in division three of the Adelaide Footy League and moved into finals contention, defeating top spot Modbury 9.10 (64) to 6.9 (45) at home.

Harrison Jolly (two majors) provided a strong option up front for the hosts, creating a number of opportunities for his teammates and winning multiple aerial battles.

Jonathon Lagonik and captain Max Renfrey were also integral in the contest, applying strong tackle pressure and hitting teammates in space with reliable disposal.

PARA HILLS TOP DOG IN DIV SEVEN

Para Hills remains the team to beat in division seven, putting together a solid display against Hackham after a tough start in wet weather, winning 8.7 (55) to 4.2 (26 () away from home.

Captain Lynton Power was a standout for his side through the middle, dominating the contest with tireless attack on the footy.

Excitement machine forward Daniel Weetra was also key to the win, booting two goals and racking up multiple score involvements.

His two majors took his current season total to 56 goals in eight games.

FALCONS SOARING IN THE SOUTH

Flagstaff Hill has remained undefeated with a courageous 9.10 (64) to 8.6 (54) win over second spot Noarlunga at Noarlunga Oval.

Falcons star and former Crows gun Sam Jacobs was influential in the ruck and up front, dominating the air and finding his mids with seamless tap-work.

Veterans Nathan Beenham and Michael Shearer were also important for the visitors in a tight contest, winning the ball and using it brilliantly under pressure and in challenging conditions.

PANTHERS POUNCE IN ARM WRESTLE

Loxton North flexed its muscle yet again in the Riverland FL with an important win over Barmera Monash away from home.

The Panthers dominated at the outset, keeping the hosts to just one behind for the entire first term, and remained at the top of the ladder, one game ahead of Waikerie, with a 9.9 (63) to 5.10 (40) result.

Rising star youngster Jonty Koehne was at his best, booting three of his side’s six goals to lead them to an important result.

RAMS RALLY AGAINST ROOS

Nairne Bremer continued its top two start to the Hills Football League season by storming back in the final term against Mount Barker away to win 5.13 (43) to 5.8 (38).

The Rams trailed by four goals late in the third term before kicking multiple late majors in the quarter and continuing their momentum in the fourth quarter to snatch victory.

Captain Brock Knott was the standout for the visitors, dominating in the middle when the game was there to be won.

The Rams will take on Hahndorf next week in a top of the ladder clash.

DEMONS IN DESTRUCTIVE FORM

Uraidla District stayed in touch with the top three of the Hills FL on Saturday, defeating fellow finals side Onkaparinga Valley 10.7 (67) to 5.4 (34) at home.

Nick Amato, Scott Taylor and Angus Clarke were all dominant in the contest and forward of the ball as the Demons booted five majors and held the Dogs scoreless in the second term to set up a big result.

The side has now won three straight after falling to Mt Lofty by a kick in round six.
