Southern suburbs students have been left devastated by the theft of their pet guinea pigs.
The two guinea pigs were taken from their home at the Aldinga Beach B-7 School’s out of school hours care (OSHC) on Tuesday night.
OSHC director Meghan Orr said the pair – named Hairyette and Cruncho – had been much-loved by students since joining the school in January.
“There are quite a few kids who are very connected to them and it’s a nice easy for them centre and take care of something so small when they’re struggling a bit,” Ms Orr said.
“It can be quite helpful for some of our kids, they’re a little bit like therapy pets.
“A lot of the kids are struggling with them being missing and there’s been a lot of concern from our families.”
An OSHC staff member found the empty cage on Wednesday morning, leading Ms Orr to believe they must have been taken overnight.
“All the doors of the cage were open and they’re quite tricky to open,” she said.
“There was a fox sighted nearby a few weeks back but it would have to be a pretty clever fox to open all of those doors and their little water bottle is gone as well.
“There was word that there were a few things missing from another unit (at the school) as well.”
Since posting news of the missing guinea pigs on Facebook, the OSHC has received an outpouring of support but no leads on the whereabouts of Cruncho and Hairyette.
Ms Orr had a simple message for the people or person who may have taken the beloved pets.
“All of our children and educators are really missing them so if you were to do the right thing and pop back and put them in their cage it’s all nice and clean and ready to go and there would be no questions asked,” she said.
Anyone with information about the missing guinea pigs is urged to contact the OSHC at 0407 559 889.
