Three teenagers have faced court for an alleged joy ride through Adelaide’s south before they were tracked down by the victim using GPS technology.
Trey Lesley McCauley, 19, appeared in the Christies Beach Magistrate court on Monday, after he was charged with illegal use of a motor vehicle and theft.
Police alleged just before 3am on August 1, a patrol was sent to Kestrel Circuit in Seaford
Rise after the alleged victim, Trent Morey, heard his Nissan Navara utility being stolen.
Mr McCauley along with a 14- and 13-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons allegedly took off in the car, colliding with garbage bins as they drove off along the street.
Police began searching the area and were guided to a location by Mr Morey whose GPS tracker indicated the vehicle was on Telegraph Road – where they later found it abandoned.
Police were assisted by police dog Rusty in the search and quickly located the 14-year-old boy on Flagpole Road.
Rusty continued searching and located Mr McCauley and the 13-year-old boy hiding in the yard of premises on the street.
Mr McCauley applied for bail, which was granted by Magistrate Jayne Basheer.
No pleas were entered and he will return to court later this year.
Mr Morey said his car was stolen while he slept in a caravan. He said he heard a commotion about 3am Monday as his keys to his Nissan Navara were allegedly being stolen.
As the thieves drove off, the car crashed into a number of bins on the street.
“I have the keys hanging just on the inside of my caravan here, so all they had to do is open up the door and see the keys hanging,” Mr Morey told 7NEWS.
Mr Morey is currently living in his brother-in-law Chris Ryan’s front yard due to the rental crisis.
“It’s just absolutely insane they have the ability to just do that and not care,” Mr Ryan said.
