A southern suburbs gun shop has announced its plans to build a 5.7-hectare outdoor shooting range and training facility.
The Gunnery at Christies Beach lodged a planning application with Onkaparinga Council to build the range at Old Noarlunga.
The Piggott Range Road facility would include club facilities for rifle, pistol and shotgun shooting and up to a 700-metre rifle range dependant on planning consent.
The Gunnery owner Peter Heggie said the local shooting community had been calling out for a facility of this kind for years.
“It’s going to be one of the biggest ranges in the southern suburbs distance-wise for rifle shooters,” he said.
“Ours is a different sort of facility, different as in it will be a longer range for people
“What we’re offering will be longer distance and more geared towards the rifle shooters as well as the pistol shooters and just a modern facility for people.”
Mr Heggie said he was putting great focus on ensuring the noise generated by the range would not impact the Old Noarlunga community.
“We’ve had professional sound engineers in for testing at considerable cost and already we’re below the required limits for daytime noise,” he said.
“So we’re already below that but me as an owner I want to make it even quieter so we’re putting a lot of time and effort into that.
“We’ve gone above and beyond the requirements of law for a range to ensure this will be one of the safest and one of the quietest ranges about.”
As part of the planning process, Mr Heggie has worked with SAPOL to ensure the range will meet noise, safety and security requirements.
“One of my biggest concerns – same as it was when we opened (The Gunnery) – was safety,” he said.
“We’ve operated the shop down here for five years with zero incidents, zero problems.
“We’re a very community based company and we put things back into the community to help where we can and the same thing will happen in Old Noarlunga.”
