If you are wandering around the Port Noarlunga foreshore this weekend and discover something unusual, do not be alarmed.
It is all part of the Series of Unexpected Events (SUE) Foreshore Festival, which will take over the area on the next two Sundays.
The biennial arts festival – a partnership between Onkaparinga Council and Open Space Contemporary Arts – will feature 20 local, national and international artists who have created works ranging from performances, sculptures and visual art to large-scale sand drawing.
Artist Heidi Karo and daughter Isadore Glockner-Karo will showcase their new work Harvest – a performance that addresses their connection and interaction with Adelaide’s seascape.
“This is our first collaboration together which looks at our love of the ocean and how important the beach is to our family life and relationship,” Karo, of Aldinga, says.
“I was involved in a coastal ambassador program where I was given a real appreciation of the underwater world and the different roles sea algae and seagrasses play.
“It was really exciting to me, so Isadore and I spent a lot of summers at the beach snorkelling ... we refer to those experiences in this work.”
The duo has created giant interpretations of sea algae, kelp and seagrass using recycled rugs, sheets, quilt covers and towels.
They will use these to connect with audiences through domestic actions such as washing, eating and sleeping on Port Noarlunga jetty.
The work also acknowledges research around sea algae and its many uses.
“Nothing is scripted but passers-by can interact with us and Isadore will be hopping in and out of the water to give people a bit more of that immersive, experimental connection,” Karo says.
SUE Foreshore Festival is on Sunday, October 13, and Sunday, October 20, noon-4pm.
