Sebastian Carlier Sosa charged with indecent assault

A young girl was left shaken after a 23-year-old man allegedly groped her in front of her mother as they were shopping in Adelaide’s south last week.

A young man with a low IQ has faced court after allegedly groping a young girl at Westfield Marion last week.

Sebastian Carlier Sosa, 23, appeared in the Christies Beach Magistrate Court on Friday, after he was arrested and charged with one count of indecent assault.

The court heard the complainant and her mother were walking side-by-side inside the busy shopping centre when Mr Carlier Sosa allegedly grabbed the young girl’s hand that was placed in front of her before dragging it around her back.

“He was with two other parties when the victim, who is 13-years-old was walking with her mother, the allegation is he (Carlier Sosa) dragged his hand behind her as he was walking past and grabbed her buttocks,” said the police prosecutor.

“She’s then told her mother who alerted security.”

The court heard Mr Carlier Sosa is currently couch surfing and experiencing homelessness.

While Mr Sosa’s defence counsel made an application for supervised bail, prosecution submitted the only form of bail they would agree to would be home detention bail.

“He is a risk to the community,” the police prosecutor said.

“He doesn't have solid housing to enable his mental health treatment to be effective, he is going to continue to be a risk to the community.”

The court heard the 23-year-old has a “significant” criminal history as an adult including resisting police, property damage, disorderly behaviour, assault and other like offending.

Mr Carlier Sosa suffers from an intellectual disability due to his IQ being 72.

“I’m concerned he doesn't have a residence where police want to check on him,” Magistrate Natalie Browne said.

A bail inquiry report was ordered and Mr Carlier Sosa will face court again in December.
