A dozen SA high schools will share in a $10 million funding boost for specialised facilities for students with disabilities.
The State Government investment will help establish 180 places for students with disabilities in time for Year 7s moving to high schools in 2022.
Southern suburbs schools Seaford Secondary College and Wirreanda Secondary School are among those receiving the funding boost.
Seaford will build a new classroom which will double its capacity to 24 places for students with disabilities.
“It is an absolute big deal for our community,” Seaford principal Harry Stassinopoulos said.
“There’s a high demand in our area for special classes.
“It’s important that those students with specialised support have access to quality learning close to home.
The school will employ an extra teacher to work in the classroom as well as school services officers to provide additional support to students.
“We’re really about our community and having a school that’s inclusive and if we can make that happen with these extra places then that, to me, is a win,” Mr Stassinopoulos said.
Schools were short-listed following a 2018 geographical analysis which projected areas in future need.
Other factors including school culture, capacity, student pathways and existing specialised education options were also considered.
“These new specialised education classes will provide an option for eligible students with a disability to maximise their learning outcomes at the highest possible standards,” Education Minister John Gardner said.
“Our aim is to ensure that every student receives the targeted support that they need, when they need it, so that they can engage successfully in their high school setting.”
