SA bakery known for its sausage rolls, wins for its pie, at Baking Association of Australia’s Baking Show

A BAKERY in Adelaide’s south has taken out a swag of awards at a national bake-off — but it was its pie, and not its top-selling sausage roll that won the judges over. A second SA bakery was also a standout.

PUTTING sugar, spice and everything nice into his breads and loaves has paid off for Christies Beach baker Andrew Sutton — while his gourmet pie has also proved a winner.

Mr Sutton, the co-owner of CJ’s Bakery on Beach Rd, walked away with four gold medals, two silvers and five bronzes at the Baking Association of Australia’s Baking Show this month.

Judges gave top honours to the bakery’s novelty cakes, plaid bread roll, fruit scrolls and sponge roll, and second place for its gourmet pie and grain cob loaf.

Up to 600 hot pastries are sold at the bakery every day — but the store’s sausage roll is its top-selling item.

The bakery tied with Glenelg’s Orange Spot for the most prizes at the awards.

“When I started baking 29 years ago I was just happy to get out of school and do it,” the 43-year-old says.

“I guess at the end of the day when you put your passion into what you do it is always going to be a good thing.

Mr Sutton, who started his career at Kytons Bakery at Edwardstown, says there is no secret to his sweet success.

“It’s about starting with a recipe that has got the flavour and adding a bit of passion behind that to come up with something that is consistently of high quality,” he says.

“Attention to detail is the other key.”

The bakery also won bronze for its fruit loaf, gateau, plain pie and sourdough rye.

Up to 600 hot pastries are sold at the bakery every day and the store’s sausage roll is its top-selling item.

The McLaren Vale Bakery also won for best layered gateau and the BetterBake Woodcroft won for best white sandwich loaf and white hi-top bread.
