Southern baker wins four silver medals for his pies and pasties at national competition

A BAKER from Adelaide’s south has taken out a swag of awards at a national pie and pastie-making competition held in Melbourne.

CHRISTIES Beach baker Andrew Sutton has creamed his competitors in The Great Aussie Pastie and Australia’s Best Pie competition — and he couldn’t be prouder.

The co-owner of CJ’s Bakery, on Beach Rd, won four silver medals at the national bake off, run by the Baking Association of Australia, earlier this month.

It was the first time Mr Sutton, who has been a baker for 26 years, had entered a national pie and pastie competition.

“I went over there confident we were going to do all right and it’s great to bring back something that rewards us for our efforts,” he said.

“It was an Australia-wide competition, with more than 250 bakeries entered and that equates to thousands of products the judges had to go through.

“We were really excited that the judges liked our stuff, it gives us confidence that we are doing the right thing and ticking some boxes.”

Mr Sutton received the awards for his traditional pastie, plain pie, pepper steak pie and vegetarian pastie.

He said he was now preparing to compete in next month’s the Exellence in Baking event at Regency Tafe next — and he’ll then be at the Royal Adelaide Show in September.

“I have done the Royal Show for the last three years and it has been one of the most stressful times of my year,” Mr Sutton said.

“The competition is for a far broader range of products ... doughnuts, vanilla slices and finger buns.”
