A 21-year-old southern suburbs drug dealer has faced court for selling cannabis to his friends.
Ryan Kantor, of Flagstaff Hill, pleaded guilty in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on Wednesday to trafficking cannabis.
The court heard Kantor had started selling cannabis to friends to support his own drug habit.
“He said he buys an ounce of cannabis at a time for $200 and breaks it down to smaller amounts,” a police prosecutor said.
“He sells five grams of cannabis for $50.
“He did not see selling drugs as an issue because he only sells to his friends.”
Police alleged Kantor had sold the drugs four times between July and August this year.
Searches of his phone revealed he was selling from his Flagstaff Hill home and also facilitating delivery of the drugs.
Defence lawyer Casey Isaacs told the court Kantor did not understand the seriousness of dealing cannabis.
“He made full and frank admissions which in my respectful submission shows his naivety towards the seriousness of the offending,” he said.
“His father ... suffered from obsessive compulsive disorder and had some alcohol and drug addiction.
“Therefore the view that Mr Kantor had of the seriousness of that type of offending was somewhat diluted because of that parent’s actions.
“What I mean by that is, he didn’t realise that even if you’re involved in drugs in that small amount there’s a real risk that you’ll end up in prison and that’s part of the naivety.”
Magistrate Rodney Oates convicted Kantor and ordered he serve a suspended sentence of six months and nine days.
