THE owner of a former winery in Old Reynella wants to transform the site into a community hub with housing, retail businesses and a childcare centre.

Tarac Technologies is funding a plan to change the zoning of the 32ha Accolade Winery site, on the corner of Reynell and Panalatinga roads, from industrial to mixed-use.

If approved it would pave the way for the company to spend up to $150 million developing the site.

It would include housing, retail and commercial businesses, health and wellbeing activities, education opportunities and a childcare centre.

Tarac Technologies chief executive Jeremy Blanks said it was too early to say how many houses would be built at the site.

He said the property’s state and local-heritage listed buildings, predominantly used as office space at the moment, would not be affected.

“The cluster of heritage buildings that front Reynell Rd will be kept,” Mr Blanks said.

He said vineyards on the north-west boundary fronting Reynell Rd and about 20 per cent of open space would be retained.

An Onkaparinga Council report said the site’s zoning was already being looked at as part of review of the region’s industrial areas.

The council has recommended Tarac Technologies focus on changing the zone on the site’s western side, where the vineyard is, to residential so it could build houses.

The report said changes to the zone on the site’s eastern side to allow commercial development would be taken care of by the council as part of its review.

Mr Blanks said the council’s support was an important first step.

“It’s really important for us to start at Onkaparinga Council level,” Mr Blanks said.

“It’s a complicated process (and) from here, remains quite long (as) there’s a lot of work that is to be done and consultation that has to be undertaken.

“This is a project that’s going to have a significant impact on the Reynella area.”

He said Tarac would now liaise with the State Government’s Planning Department to ensure the site’s zoning could be changed and approved by the Planning Minister.

The project is expected to create 2500 jobs during the construction process with a further 2000 long-term jobs once it is finished.

Accolade Wines has continued to lease the north-east corner of the site but grape wine crushing ceased in the 1980s.
