Onkaparinga Council’s $2.2m playground at Wilfred Taylor Reserve, Morphett Vale, starts to take shape

The south’s largest nature playground – set to rival the popular space at Morialta Conservation Park – is starting to take shape.

Construction is well underway on what will become the south’s largest nature playground – and one of the biggest in Adelaide.

Cranes were at Wilfred Taylor Reserve last week lifting play equipment – including “possum” hangouts, climbing nets and slides – into place.

A $1.3 million State Government grant is funding the development of the playground, while Onkaparinga Council is spending $900,000 on infrastructure such as additional carparking, a new access road from Wheatsheaf Rd, pathways, lighting, furniture and irrigation.

“I spent some time checking out the play space and picnic area’s progress last week and it’s looking fantastic,” Onkaparinga Mayor Erin Thompson said.

“I can’t wait to share this awesome place with (the public) when it’s open and safe to do so.”

The playspace has been compared to the popular Morialta Nature Playground in the east and will be double the size of Jubilee Park, Port Noarlunga.

When complete, it will feature a sensory garden, water and nature play areas and the more traditional playground equipment.

Construction is expected to finish the coming months with an official opening later this year.

“Timing-wise, we’re planning to hold an official opening towards the end of this year, but of course, that’s all dependent upon the State Government coronavirus restrictions at the time,” Ms Thompson said.
