There’s no denying when it comes to pizza, Pizzateca know their craft.

The McLaren Vale pizza institution has added yet another win to its list after being named the best pizza place in Adelaide’s south and receiving more than 30 per cent of reader votes in our latest Delicious Local poll.

Owner Tony Mitolo said it’s attention to detail and a commitment to “all hands no cans” that set Pizzateca pizzas apart.

“We don’t use any bottles or cans at all, we crush all our own tomatoes and make our own sauce,” he said.

“Last year we crushed 35 tonne of South Australian tomatoes that are predominantly from greenhouses that my father has out at Virginia and that we grow specifically for pizzateca.

“That’s how much sauce we go through and that’s what it takes to do what we do.”

After less than five years in business, the Chalk Hill Road pizzeria has quickly become a favourite for pizza fans in the region and across SA.

“We’ve grown so much but McLaren Vale has grown so much in the last five years too,” Mr Mitolo – a passionate McLaren Vale advocate – said.

“There have been so many changes and new businesses in that short time and there are so many more things to do down here now than there were when we started.

“We are very lucky to be in what we think is the most beautiful region in South Australia.”

Mr Mitolo said the classic Margherita is a fan-favourite but the more unique “Diablo”pizza has earned its spot in the top pizzas list.

“One of our most favourite pizzas to make is a Margherita and that is really popular which is great because the sauce that we make by hand is the real feature of the margherita,” he said.

“People really respond well to our diablo as well, when we first started they didn’t really want something with chilli honey on it but they were intrigued and it’s pretty unique.”
