1. Pizzateca, 319 Chalk Hill Rd, McLaren Vale
1178 votes, 55.2 per cent
Nothing beats an authentic, Italian slice of heaven – made by hand, with no rolling pins. And by the guys who would know best.
With a family hailing from Italy, the father-and-son duo Vito and Tony Mitolo use techniques passed down from generation to generation, with locally sourced ingredients.
Typical of this is their sugo, made with traditional, Italian techniques and local Virginia- grown Roma tomatoes.
And they don’t stop there – they source, sort, cook, drain, crush and jar each one.
On the menu, there’s a very pizza oztalia section, with 35cm pizzas that are hand- stretched, on a thin base with a puffy outer. The dough leavens for 24 to 48 hours, which helps create a black-spotted crust.
Hand built in Naples, their wood oven then cooks at a temperature of more than 400C in 60-90 seconds.
Try: Salsiccia ($28), with house-made pork, chilli & fennel seed sausage, wood-smoked mozzarella, for di latte, lardo, sliced fennel and fennel tops
