A southern council is being slammed after reinforcing rules that some say emulate the early 1900s.
The Marion Outdoor Pool used its Facebook page to post what it deems as “acceptable” swimwear, including a “modest one piece”.
The post encourages males to wear boardshorts or Speedos, while women are expected to wear a “standard” bikini, swimskirts or a tankini.
Kids are also encouraged to wear a non-transparent rashguard or t-shirt.
And while most expect a rehashing of pool rules this time of year, some have called the move ‘out of date’.
“Seems like someone with religious affiliation/control issues has been given a position in charge and decided its 1920. Might want to get with Australian culture and 21st C and apply for a position in a more conservative part of the world. Because you are out of date here,” one user wrote.
“Who wore what to prompt this post? Feels like we are still living in the 1930s. People should have a freedom of choice!” another wrote.
The pool was quick to respond saying they weren’t expecting the reminder to make such a “splash”.
“This is an issue about too much clothing, not too little,” the response reads.
“While pool management has received complaints in the past from the public about scanty swimwear, the main concern for staff is patrons wearing too much inappropriate clothing such as tracksuit pants and jeans, particularly ‘jean shorts’ which pose a safety risk.
“No one wearing bikinis – Brazilian-style or otherwise – has been asked to leave the facility.”
The City of Marion has been contacted for further comment.
