A man will be released from custody after defecating on the front step of a supermarket in Adelaide’s south.

Kristoffer Graeme Coghlan, 36, was sentenced in the Adelaide Magistrate Court on Tuesday for 20 charges that include disorderly behaviour and damage to property.

The court heard on February 6, Coghlan approached the Coles at Plympton where he “removed his clothing” before defecating just outside the store.

“It was observed by witnesses and took place in a front entrance walkway,” Magistrate Kate White said.

“That was no doubt a very disturbing incident for the people who witnessed it and for the coles staff.”

This was just one of the many “undignified” and “anti social” offences Coghlan participated in over a 10 month period.

The court heard Coghlan entered a number of restaurants and fast food establishments in the CBD and surrounding suburbs, harassing staff and customers, taking food off tables and from the kitchen while helping himself to refreshments.

On Christmas Eve last year, Coghlan entered Priceline at Glenelg where he was observed to be swearing and harassing people, staff also saw Coghlan drink hand sanitiser.

“You were intoxicated and shouting at passers-by,” Magistrate White said.

“You were threatening towards staff and generally abusive.”

On January 2 this year, Coghlan stole a six pack from a hotel at Victor Harbor and was later located lying on the road at Myponga.

“My primary concern is the safety of the community,” Magistrate White said.

“I know that the community includes businesses who are entitled to feel safe from petty theft and the sort of disorderly and abusive conduct that you engaged in this 10 month period.

“Think of the working businesses that were affected by your criminal activities are entitled to go about their work without feeling intimidated, harassed and afraid.”

The court heard Coghlan has an extensive 19 page criminal history, much of which has been caused by a “serious alcohol addiction”.

“You’ve told me this is one of the longest periods of sobriety that you’ve managed in your adult life,” Magistrate White said.

“I sincerely hope this period of sobriety will continue when you are back in the community.”

Coghlan was sentenced to a total of 109 days imprisonment backdated to February 6 of this year.

Convictions were recorded.
