A southern suburbs sports and social club has been left without a kitchen after a car crashed into its clubrooms this morning.
Around 1.30am on Monday morning, a P-plater allegedly crashed his Ford Festiva into the kitchen wall of the Happy Valley Sports and Social Club at Aberfoyle Park.
Sport and Social Club president Ross Schurgott said the the building’s kitchen had been severely damaged by the crash.
“The actual damage to the wall and the infrastructure of the kitchen and cupboards and things like that is probably pretty hefty but apart from that I think we’ve gotten through it OK apart from some water damage,” Mr Schurgott said.
“Obviously the kitchen is going to be out of operation for some time, I don’t know how long but we should be able to be up and running by Thursday with the bar facilities.”
Mr Schurgott said luckily the accident happened at a time when the club – which houses a number of sports clubs including football, cricket, softball and netball – wasn’t busy.
“It’s unfortunate it’s happened but it’s probably happened at a good time of year where it’s not so busy and it’s Christmas time where a lot of the groups shut down,” he said.
“I think most people can’t wait for 2020 to be over and done with.”
Onkaparinga Mayor Erin Thompson was unavailable for comment but on social media said the council-owned building had not been structurally damaged.
“The penetration did however cause damage to the clubs kitchen and pipework which has resulted in minor flooding to the building and a disrupted power supply,” she said.
The 19-year-old driver from Woodcroft recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.041 which is in breach of probationary licence conditions.
He was reported for breach of license conditions and driving without due care and will face court at a later date.
Onkaparinga Council has been contacted for comment.
