The young woman who allegedly caused the crash that killed a 19-year-old netballer in February has fronted court for the first time.

Grace Veronica Taylor, 21, wore a neck brace as she appeared in Christies Beach Magistrates Court, surrounded by her family.

Taylor is charged with causing death by dangerous driving and five counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

She was charged following the crash that killed 19-year-old Ivy Rose Hughes at the intersection of Binney, Malpas and Main roads in McLaren Vale just after 10pm on Wednesday, February 24.

Taylor was driving a Mazda SUV, with Ms Hughes in the passenger seat, on the way home from a concert at a winery when she collided with a Mitsubishi ute.

Ms Hughes was a keen netballer who played for the Matrics Netball Club.

After the teenager’s tragic death, Matrics Netball Club posted a statement on Facebook honouring the “incredible young woman”.

“The entire netball community has been saddened by this news,” the post read.

A letter written by Ms Hughes’ mother, Paula, was also read.

“Wherever your journey took you in life, you touched and taught every person you met in some way. You left an everlasting impression,” the letter read.

“I will miss you terribly but I am at peace knowing that although you lived 19 years, you had a full life and you’re with all of us now with your angel wings up above, working on making the world a better place.”

Since the incident, Mawson state Labor MP Leon Bignell has called for guard rails to stop cars rolling into a steep ditch to be installed at the intersection of Malpas and Main roads.

“A few years ago the department installed guard rails further up Main Rd in front of Penny’s Hill Winery,” Mr Bignell wrote.

“Obviously we have to wait for the police investigation to be completed into (the) fatal crash but, regardless of that, it would probably be prudent to install guard rails on this road to prevent cars from ending up in the ditch.”

Taylor’s matter was adjourned until August 25 for a preliminary hearing in Adelaide Magistrates Court.
