The McLaren Vale intersection where Ivy-Rose Hughes died in a crash on Wednesday needs urgent safety improvements, according to a local MP

Mawson state Labor MP Leon Bignell has called for guard rails to stop cars rolling into a steep ditch to be installed at the intersection of Malpas and Main roads.

Mr Bignell wrote a letter to Transport Minister Corey Wingard on Thursday in light of the “tragic” road fatality.

Ms Hughes, 19, was killed when the Mazda SUV in which she was a passenger was in a crash with a Mitsubishi ute. Both cars went into the embankment, causing the Mazda to flip on its side.

In the letter, Mr Bignell said he had visited the site of the fatal crash and believed the Transport Department should consider a rail along the “deep channel” by the roadside.

“A few years ago the department installed guard rails further up Main Road in front of Penny’s Hill Winery,” Mr Bignell wrote.

“Obviously we have to wait for the police investigation to be completed into (the) fatal crash but, regardless of that, it would probably be prudent to install guard rails on this road to prevent cars from ending up in the ditch.”

Paramedics and police were unable to save Ms Hughes, a promising netballer, when they attended the scene of the crash on Wednesday night.

The driver and three other passengers of the Mazda were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The three occupants of the Mitsubishi were also treated for minor injuries.
