A 52-year-old man told a court he thought he had rectified his alleged defrauding of Centrelink, claiming he “didn’t know what the go was”.

A Hackham West man told the court he “didn’t know what the go was” after he allegedly misled Centrelink.

David Hamilton, 52, faced the Christies Beach Magistrate Court on Tuesday, charged with six counts of obtain financial advantage for self from another person.

The court heard Mr Hamilton was already on two suspended sentences for similar offending when he allegedly withheld income information from Centrelink between December 2014 and December 2020.

“These are serious charges,” Magistrate Teresa Anderson said.

“Depending on the amount of money the Commonwealth has been defrauded of, imprisonment is a real possibility.”

Mr Hamilton told the court he thought the situation had been rectified.

“I’m paying it off; I don’t know what the go is,” Mr Hamilton said.

“As far as I know they are taking $200 a fortnight out of my wages for this.”

Magistrate Anderson explained to Mr Hamilton that a serious criminal offence had still occurred and legal advice should be sought.

The prosecutor for the Commonwealth told the court they would be seeking the previous two terms of imprisonment to be brought into affect.

It is unclear how much Mr Hamilton allegedly undeclared to Centrelink.

No pleas were entered.

Mr Hamilton will face court again in March.
