Beach bar gets the green light at Christies Beach

A pop-up beach bar in Adelaide’s south has been approved — just days after one planned for nearby Port Willunga by the same team was scrapped because of community backlash.

A pop-up beach bar will go ahead at Christies Beach but patrons will have to “concentrate” to hear the music.

As part of a plan to activate its beaches, Onkaparinga Council has approved a proposal by Justin McCarthy, from the Australian Trade Alliance, for a pop-up bar on the foreshore from December 12 to January 27.

Mr McCarthy was also planning to run a similar event at Port Willunga this summer but withdrew his application just days ago after an uproar from residents.

The council gave the Christies Beach bar the green light on the condition that there is no live music and that music is “at a level that patrons must concentrate to hear”.

This requirement is to ensure the music cannot be heard in nearby homes.

Temporary fencing of a “high quality” will also have to be installed.

The bar will close at 9.30pm Monday to Thursday and at 11.30pm on weekends.

The pop-up bar first opened at the end of Beach Rd in 2017 and was a popular attraction.

However, some locals complained about the noise and the increased competition for bricks and mortar businesses during their busiest season.

Councillor Martin Bray said there was a lack of consideration shown to residents during the previous event and that he expected better this time.

“We shouldn’t be causing harm to people,” Cr Bray said.

“If we are serious about (having the event) here, we need to be serious about making sure (the organiser) complies (with our conditions).”

According to the council’s community consultation, 71 per cent of the 121 responses received were in favour of the event going ahead this year.

Councillor Heidi Greaves said it was important the council listened to residents concerns while also being mindful of not “ absolutely tying people up in red tape”.

“It is these types of events that bring people into our city,” Cr Greaves said.

“This council has invested millions of dollars into our coast and it is an incredibly beautiful part of our city.”
