Just before 9.30am, a resident of a home on Gloucester Ave in Belair, heard noises inside his home and found an unknown man in the kitchen.
The occupant confronted the intruder who then assaulted him and stole his car keys and wallet.
The suspect then stole the victim’s Mercedes convertible.
Around 40 minutes later, witnesses spotted the stolen Mercedes being abandoned at the intersection of Unley Rd and Wattle Rd and the driver running off.
A grey Hyundai iMax van collected the driver and sped off along Mitchell St.
Patrols quickly surrounded the area and spotted the van on Cross Rd.
When the driver saw police, he immediately drove off into Thomas Street at Clarence Gardens and crashed into three parked cars in the street.
The driver abandoned the car and attempted to run from the scene but was arrested a short distance away.
A 29-year-old Ascot Park man is expected to be charged later today.
A passenger of the vehicle was also seen running south on Thomas Street but police were not able to locate him.
