SNAKE catcher Steve Brown was confused to arrive at a Clarendon house to find an eastern brown snake acting unusually.
Mr Brown, from Snake Catchers Adelaide, inspected the tangled mess and realised the snake was actually eating a smaller eastern brown.
“They are known as being cannibalistic, but this is the first one I’ve encountered,” he said.
He gently forced the larger snake to let go of the smaller snake it had semi-devoured.
“It regurgitated the prey and moved on,” Mr Brown said.
“I caught both but the other one had died in the incident.”
The snakes were found just metres from the back door of the house.
“The owner was extremely worried,” Mr Brown said.
“His wife was locked inside with the kids.”
This was the fourth time in two weeks Snake Catchers Adelaide had been called to the southern suburbs.
Snakes were also found on properties in Woodcroft, Huntfield Heights and Happy Valley.
Mr Brown warned residents to be vigilant and keep doors closed so snakes seeking a cool spot to hide could not get inside.
“They’re everywhere at the moment,” Mr Brown said.
“It’s one of the biggest seasons we’ve ever had.
“There’s been plenty around because it was a pretty wet winter (so) there’s plenty of food around for them.”
He said anyone bitten should immediately seek first aid and not wipe the bite site because hospital staff used the venom to identify the type of snake.
