A passion for delivering for her clients and an unwavering commitment to fulfil their wishes and needs has seen Chelsea Murphy make waves in the hairdressing industry.
Now, the reputation she has built over 14 years in the trade has seen Miss Murphy crowned SA’s Best Hairdresser, having won the reader’s vote in The Advertiser’s recent poll.
Nominations for Miss Murphy paid tribute to her strong relationship-building with those who visit her salon, her honest approach when it comes to looks and styles, and her ongoing care for her client’s hair.
Unlike some of her colleagues, it wasn’t always clear to Miss Murphy that hairdressing was what she wanted to do.
“I started a bit later than others, when I was 21,” she said.
“I tried the uni route, but really wanted to work and study at the same time so I fell into an apprenticeship … I really enjoyed it from the beginning.”
And 14 years later, she is still loving her job and building a strong reputation across Adelaide.
“I love the job – it’s the lifestyle that it brings, you get to chat to your friends all day,” she said.
“You get to work with your friends and your clients are your friends.”
Miss Murphy said she specialised in upstyling and took pride in preparing brides for their special day.
She said between her full-time job at Vain Hair in Glenelg and working weddings during the summer months, she was committing to long hours but an upside of the recent Covid pandemic had been the change in attitude from customers.
“There are long hours, but going through Covid has helped – clients have become more flexible,” she said.
“When (visiting the hairdresser) was possibly being taken away and people didn’t think they could get their hair done, it helped them appreciate and see us how we see us – as people and friends.”
Miss Murphy said she was surprised to have won the title as best hairdresser and thanked her clients and her work team at Vain Hair.
