Single mother Sarah Janes Hayes pleaded guilty to two counts of drug trafficking

A drug dealer was told she was a “bee’s whisker” away from going to jail and “wasn’t being a good mother” when she was high on meth all the time.

Breaking the ice: Meth use in SA

A meth dealer was slammed by a judge for her “disorganised and chaotic” lifestyle and for not being a good mother when she was high on drugs all the time.

Sarah Jane Hayes, 41, was told she was a “bee’s whisker” away from going to jail for a long time if she didn’t change her ways.

Judge Paul Muscat was left less than impressed after Hayes showed up to sentencing submissions in the District Court close to half an hour late.

The court heard Hayes’ father was driving them to court when his car overheated and they had to pull over.

Judge Muscat said Hayes’ excuses for being late or missing court “just goes on and on” and it was “most unacceptable”.

“You have a shocking history of turning up late or not turning up at all,” he said.

Judge Muscat said reports showed Hayes was leading a “disorganised and chaotic lifestyle”.

“Ms Hayes, you’re a bee’s whisker away of being sent to prison for a long time. You’ve got to do better than you have,” he said.

“If you want to avoid going to jail, you’ve got to do the right thing otherwise your daughter will not have you for four or five years. How would you feel about that?”

Hayes replied she wouldn’t like that.

The court heard Hayes was a single mother to a nine-year-old daughter.

Judge Muscat asked how trafficking and using drugs over an extended period was assisting her daughter.

“She wasn’t being a very good mother if she was always high on meth and then selling meth,” he said.

“She’s driving disqualified, she’s driving with meth in her oral fluid, she’s driving dangerously to engage in a police pursuit … that’s shocking conduct.”

Hayes, of Valley View, pleaded guilty to two counts of drug trafficking, arising from incidents in January and March 2019.

Judge Muscat said even though Hayes “probably doesn’t deserve it” he’d give her another chance to attend drug and alcohol counselling and demonstrate she’s not using drugs.

“If you stuff up, then you can expect to end up serving the sentence of imprisonment,” he said.

“Don’t disappoint me and don’t let down your daughter.”

The charges were adjourned until September.
