What started as a conversation with a psychic has led a Victor Harbor nail technician to being named the best in the state.

Alana Davis, 29, has been voted South Australia’s best nail technician in the latest Messenger ‘best of’ poll.

More than six years ago Mrs Davis was looking to start a career in counselling when a run-in with a psychic changed her path.

“My friend and I always used to go get our nails done together and I used to joke around and say I wish I could do our nails ourselves,” she said.

“Then I went to a psychic fair and a man told me that I had to do nails and that was my path and I’ve just giggled about it ever since.”

The Fleurieu Peninsula nail technician and educator’s impressive nail skills earned her more than 17 per cent of votes.

“It’s really one of those started from the bottom now I’m here moments, it’s really exciting,” she said.

Mrs Davis said in her six years of doing nails there have been big changes in the industry and what customers are looking for.

“It’s been massive, there’s always something that comes into fashion whether it’s rhinestone crystals to French and ombre,” she said.

“You’ll go trough a phase where you can’t convince anybody to get French for six to 12 months and then suddenly everyone wants it.

“The amount of times I’ve had girls come in with Instagram photos saying Khloe Kardashian or Kim Kardashian have had this set so I want it done is crazy.”

But, Mrs Davis says the long days doing nails are all worth it when she sees her clients’ reactions.

“I love seeing how happy people are when they leave because it always cheers girls up,” she said.

“You really build a relationship with your clients, some of my clients I’ve had since I started.”

Goodwood nail technician Nick Tran was voted second best in SA with Mika Copeland from Hope Valley rounding out the top three.
