An upgrade of a dangerous Port Lincoln intersection drawing concern from locals will be assessed after a motorcyclist was hit by a car on Tuesday, suffering serious injuries.

Robby Reay was on his way to work at Woolworths when he went through the Liverpool Street roundabout when a car failed to give way, colliding with him just after 5.40pm.

“I was heading towards work and I had right of way because she was on my left side,” Mr Reay explained.

“I just kept going and she didn’t stop and eventually hit me on my bike and I bounced off the bonnet and hit road, falling on my left side and broke my shin bone in three places.”

The night fill worker said the driver stopped and assisted in calming him down while emergency services arrived.

Port Lincoln MFS attended the scene along with police and SA Ambulance.

While thankful to come out relatively unscathed, Mr Raey would like to see drivers in the future take more accountability for their actions, especially around Port Lincoln’s CBD.

“It wouldn’t hurt putting traffic lights at that intersection but drivers should be more aware of everything, even if they’ve claimed they didn’t see anything, they should always stop,” he said.

The roundabout has been of interest to both the Port Lincoln City Council and locals after a $32m vision was released for the town, with some worried it would only increase the traffic congestion in the area.

Chief executive Matthew Morgan, said the council was working with the Department of Transport to improve the intersection for both vehicles and pedestrians.

“Council is aware of concerns within the community of safety along this stretch of road, particularly with the closure of the railway line and increase in heavy vehicle movement,” Mr Morgan said.

“Options are being explored with the Department of Transport, some have suggested traffic lights, this could certainly be one option, as could altered configurations for the roundabouts, however this is subject to further work with the department and consultation with the community.”
