Port Lincoln jetty has received a glow up after an electrical fault caused its lights to malfunction some weeks ago.
The issue is predicted to have occurred due to the wild weather our state has been experiencing, causing rough swells and high tides.
A few residents in particular find this repair especially helpful as they utilise the jetty for a liberating weekly ritual.
Local speech pathologist, Georgia Renwick and physiotherapist, Ciara Williams rise before the sun and brave the sea every Wednesday for a salty dip – followed by a hot cuppa at Rogue & Rascal, who welcome the growing group with “open arms and smiling faces”.
What started as just a few participants and their mascot, Nellie the dog, Georgia and Ciara started convincing their housemates and other health professionals from the area to join.
“We thought it would be a great opportunity to gather like-minded people together,” Georgia said.
Upward of 25 people now brave the cold with them weekly for an invigorating, morning swim which Georgia said certainly felt a lot darker these last few weeks without lights.
All are welcome to join the movement as an opportunity to make connections with other locals and “chitchat with a bunch of legends” over coffee, post-swim.
“We love the idea that you don’t have to be any specific ‘type’ of person” Georgia said.
“It’s not like playing a sport, just be a good human and you are welcome.”
Georgia and Ciara adopted the Salty Sips concept from the Adelaide gathering that takes place at Henley Beach every Wednesday, which receives up to 500 brave dippers weekly.
Until summer arrives the repair of the jetty lights makes those brisk, winter mornings in Lincoln that bit brighter and Georgia and Ciara are “grateful to have support from all of the local businesses and council on their mission for community inclusivity.
