Port Lincoln City Council are seeking feedback over the seaside town’s $7m foreshore facelift come June.

Council is one of the 57 projects across the state awarded from the Local Government Infrastructure Program in March for the foreshore redevelopment.

“This is a great win for the EP in general, with over $9.13m of funding provided to eight projects across the Eyre Peninsula,” Mayor Brad Flaherty said.

Council is very excited and grateful to receive the news of the $3.64m of state funding to go towards our Foreshore Redevelopment Project”

“Money in our community, means local jobs during the project and better amenity for both locals and visitors once the project has been completed.”

With the concepts narrowed down to two, Chief Executive Officer Matthew Morgan now is the time the community to have their say about which Port Lincoln they would like to see heading into the future.

“Council are looking for both quantitative and qualitative inputs into the final designs for the foreshore redevelopment and what would be best moving forward,” Mr Morgan said.

“We originally had around 20 to 30 deleted carparks, we have now revised that to around six to allow for bigger vehicles, including buses to have access to our foreshore.

“It also opens the area up for potential event space in the future, including markets and food trucks.”

At the time of the initial release of the plans, some were concerned the walkway across the grassed area would welcome some unwanted attention.

“I would just like to leave the foreshore as is,” Port Lincoln resident Annette Harder said at a March meeting.

“I don’t agree with the public platform above the toilets, where people could sit there and eye off people going to the toilet, that actually makes me feel a little bit ill.

“We have a magnificent foreshore and just leave it the way it is.”

Two other economic stimulus projects, the library and Visitor Centre incorporating a cinema and cafe and fast-tracking of stormwater infrastructure were not successful for funding under the LGIPP funding program.

However, the library and visitor centre project has also been submitted for grant funding under the federal government’s Better Building Regions Fund Program to be announced later in the year.

Public Consultation on the Foreshore Redevelopment Concepts Plan will commence Thursday May 20 and closes 9am Friday June 11.
