Despite his unconventional start to the industry, South Australia’s newly-crowned best tattoo artist said he couldn’t be more appreciative of the road travelled.
Luke Schubert, of Rise and Shine Tattoo Studio in Port Lincoln, was voted SA’s best as apart of The Messenger’s Best Of series.
Mr Schubert said although he was found himself doodling in the back of his school books, a career revolving it never crossed his mind.
“I was just working at Woolworths, basically chilling and one of my mates who I was living with at the time was tattooing,” Mr Schubert said.
“And just one afternoon I just went in and tattooed him, still in my woollies uniform and it just came out really good, everyone started asking me how I did it, but I didn’t know.
“I was always drawing something … just never took it too seriously.”
Now 13 years in, Mr Schubert has spent time with some of SA’s best tattoo artists and opened his own studio in his beloved home town of Port Lincoln.
“Having your own business comes with it’s own businesses for sure,” he said.
“But I’ve had people travel to Lincoln and it’s cool to be able to bring people to Lincoln because it will be the first time they’ve been there.
“Even after working in Adelaide for a few years I was able to build up clientele are still supporting me now even though they need to travel.”
While he may specialise in geometric and floral designs, there’s not a lot Mr Schubert wont say no to.
“Feel like I’m and all rounder which comes from my early days working in a walk in shop and having to do whatever comes through the door,” he said.
“I’ve always had a steady hand and I enjoy making tattoos as perfect as I can.
“It’s just such a unique career.”
