Dumped oysters and a deteriorating shelter left for dead in Coffin Bay

Seaside residents are asking council to clean up their act after finding dumped oysters and overgrown gardens, leaving their town looking worse for wear.

Residents of a quaint seaside town are asking council to clean up their act as their current foreshore has been left in a state of disarray.

Several long term Coffin Bay residents wrote to the Lower Eyre Peninsula Council with complaints about dead oysters and a deteriorating shelter in dire need of repairs or removal.

“A letter has been received complaining about the area around the staircase to the slipway beach. Council staff met with the letter writers in April to discuss the issues,” the report said.

“These long-time residents advised that they were never in favour of the project from the beginning and would be satisfied for the whole beach access to be removed.”

The report also highlighted the specific area in question made it difficult for maintenance and repairs, leaving the beach dependant on the carting of sand however at a council meeting back in 2015 but found it could not be done in a safe manner.

“Council will not consider replacing sand at the beach east of the town wharf slipway as the sand is subject to removal by tides and there would be also difficulty in getting sand to the beach,” the report said.

“The beach now consists of exposed rock and even though some repairs were done on the staircase which appears to be structurally sound, it needs to be reassessed as the lower footings have been undermined in places.”

Council will discuss the issue further at the May meeting with a recommendation to remove the shelter as continue to monitor any illegal dumping along the foreshore.
