A two-month-old albino python has been returned to the Sefton Park pet shop it was stolen from – with the culprits caught on CCTV.

A baby snake has been returned unharmed to the Sefton Park pet store it was stolen from.

CCTV shows a hooded person returning the two-month old north western albino python to PETstock Sefton Park around 10.30am on Tuesday.

Staff were worried the baby snake could already be dead after being stolen from its enclosure.

Thieves broke a lock on the snake’s enclosure before stealing the hatchling just after 4.40pm on Friday.

PETstock state manager Belinda Stansfield said the young snake appeared to be unharmed and would be taken to the vet to be checked.

“It looks like the lady had tried to feed it crickets,” she said.

After the theft, Ms Stansfield said the snake required specific care and would die “within days” without it.

“It needs the correct humidity, heating and lighting and it needs to be fed weekly, they do require a lot of care as babies,” Ms Stansfield said.

“Before selling any animal in store, we give potential customers extensive advice on the care of the animal prior to purchase.

“This snake has not been given the right to grow up in the right environment where it will receive the right care.

“It has caused much distress to the staff who care for these animals and are very worried for its welfare.”

Staff discovered the snake had been stolen when they went to feed it on Friday afternoon.

CCTV showed two people at the enclosure around the time of the theft of the snake, which can sell for up to $600.

Ms Stansfield said the thieves would be unable to legally sell the “highly sought after” snake due to the permits and record-keeping required.

“For us, it’s not about the money it’s that someone’s stolen a live animal and that’s not on,” she said.

“Basically this snake is going to end up on the black market or sold illegally, there’s no legal way for them to sell this snake.

“We just want the snake back and for it to be safe and no questions asked.

“If anyone knows the people in the video or a family member or friend who has just acquired a hatchling albino we would like them to come forward and help out.”

The theft was reported to SA Police.
