Steven Allan Main faces charge of assault for Elizabeth City Centre attack

He was jailed for manslaughter in 2011 after stabbing his mate in the neck while he was drunk, now this man’s been charged over another alleged drunken attack.

Violent street brawl

A man once found guilty of manslaughter after a drunken fight with his friend allegedly headbutted a man he knew several times, while drunk, at a popular northern suburbs shopping centre.

Steven Allan Main, 50, on Monday faced the Elizabeth Magistrates Court by video link charged with assault and dishonestly taking property without consent.

The court heard Main, from Elizabeth Downs, was drunk and walking around Elizabeth City Centre when he allegedly booted the backpack and belongings of a man he knew before headbutting him during an altercation.

A police prosecutor on Monday opposed bail on the basis of Main’s prior criminal history and because he was on bail for affray charges stemming from a separate alleged fight at the same shopping centre.

The prosecutor described how Main allegedly “got angry” towards the man police say he headbutted on Saturday.

“He began kicking the victim’s belongings around before (Main) fronted up to the victim standing in his face,” the prosecutor said.

“The victim put his hand on (Main’s) chest to attempt to distance them. (Main) has then headbutted the victim multiple times to the forehead and nose.

“The victim has then tried to pick his belongings up and (Main) has started kicking them over before grabbing his backpack and throwing it over a fence.”

Main, the court heard, spent three years and 10 months in prison from 2012 after he was found guilty of manslaughter after facing trial for the murder of Jamie Lewis on Australia Day in 2011.

He was acquitted of murder but a jury found the then 40-year-old guilty of manslaughter after the court heard he and Mr Lewis had been in a fist fight before Main stabbed his friend in the neck in an act “excessive of self-defence”.

Vanessa Cream, duty solicitor for Main, in applying for bail told the court Main, who knew the alleged victim because they were both homeless in the community, denied the allegations.

“The bag was thrown … he retrieved the bag and gave it back to the person,” she said.

“They don’t have a history … (and) it appears the alleged victim was the aggressor.”

Ms Cream added Main’s manslaughter conviction was “not necessarily an offence of violence”.

Magistrate Justin Wickens released Main on bail in the sum of $500 to be under the supervisions of corrections.

Mr Wickens ordered Main to return to court in November.
