For Square 44 co-owner Chantelle Dean, healthy living and great food go hand-in-hand.
It is a philosophy which has helped the Surrey Downs cafe win the best brunch vote for the northern area.
Square 44 won our latest Delicious Local poll after bringing in more than a quarter of the vote.
“I love eating out and I’m obsessed with food, but I also love living a healthy lifestyle,” Ms Dean said.
“So we do a lot of traditional brunch dishes, but healthier versions.”
More than half of the brunch dishes available at Square 44 are suitable for vegans, with a major focus on plant-based food in the cafe’s dishes.
Ms Dean said smashed avocado, like in many cafes, was a favourite at Square 44.
“A lot of customers talk about our smashed avocado, butt’s a bit different to normal,” she said.
Along with the usual avocado and feta, Square 44’s dish comes with beetroot relish on rye bread topped with a house seed mix.
As well as focusing on healthy and tasty food options, supporting other local businesses is also key at Square 44.
“I understand how hard it’s been for small businesses (through COVID),” she said.
Ms Dean said the name for Square 44 came from her family.
“My Dad used to race Supercars and his number was 44, and my brother is a BMX racer and he changed his number to 44 to be like Dad,” she said.
“So the name Square 44 is a way of keeping up the family tradition.”
Ms Dean said it was great to take out the title for best brunch in the north.
“It’s very heart warming. We appreciate the support and we’re very happy with what we’ve created,” she said.
Rounding out the top three brunch spots in the north were Saints Kitchen at Salisbury Plains and Watershed Cafe at Mawson Lakes.
