An eight-month pregnant woman and a personal trainer are facing drug trafficking charges after a large amount of fantasy, methamphetamine and tick lists were allegedly found during a search in Salisbury.
Sonia Kay Doeuk, 42, will likely give birth to her child in custody after she was refused bail for allegedly being caught at the centre of multiple drug busts.
Doeuk’s co-accused, Adam Fennell, 46, is also charged with commercial drug trafficking.
Fennell, believed to be Doeuk’s partner, was working as an F45 trainer at the Glenelg studio until recently.
Sophie Wilson, for Doeuk, told the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday her client was eight months pregnant and asked for her release on bail.
“She has a significantly high-risk pregnancy, there’s risk of pre-eclampsia,” she said.
“They may have to induce her in two weeks.”
A police prosecutor told the court that police attended and searched Doeuk’s Lightsview home in October, 2019.
“There were various illicit substances located,” the prosecutor said.
Police allegedly found 16g of MDMA, 100g of marijuana, methamphetamine, various mobile phones and tick lists (a record of debt owed to the dealer), as well as other drug-dealing indicators.
Officers charged Doeuk with four counts of trafficking.
The court heard police attended Doeuk’s property a couple of days later.
“They located the accused lying face down, foaming at the mouth – they suspected she was suffering from a drug overdose,” the police prosecutor said.
“In that search police located further tick lists relating to debts of sale, a further amount of methamphetamine and further mobile phone devices,” the police prosecutor said.
Police also allegedly found 1.5kg of GHB, also known as fantasy.
Doeuk was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment.
“She told police she had taken some medication for hayfever and that’s why she felt dizzy,” the police prosecutor said.
The court heard Doeuk was then taken into custody and was released on home detention bail in February.
The court heard police then attended Doeuk’s Salisbury Downs property in August.
“There was a delayed response at the front door,” the police prosecutor said.
“The co-accused, Mr Fennell – who police now say is the partner, at least at the time of the offending of the accused – has communicated to the accused that police are at the property.”
The court heard police allegedly located 14g of methamphetamine thrown into a bin, digital scales, empty resealable bags, tick lists and $770 cash.
“A clear bottle was located in the laundry premises … police say that is 1.7kg of GHB and another plastic resealable bag of approximately 10g of methamphetamine was found.”
The court heard Doeuk had also breached bail by returning multiple positive drug tests.
“There’s been no evidence provided to suggest that this birth cannot be appropriately managed in custody,” the police prosecutor said.
Doeuk, of Salisbury Downs, and Fennell, of Flinders Park, are both charged with trafficking in a commercial quantity of drugs. They are yet to enter any pleas.
Ms Wilson told the court Doeuk, who is a mother, has already spent a significant amount of time in custody.
“She does have stable accommodation to go to,” she said. “She also has great family support.”
Chief Magistrate Mary-Louise Hribal refused Doeuk bail.
The charges were adjourned until June.
