Salisbury councillor Severina Burner sent conspiracy email to entire council

A bizarre motion passed by the Salisbury council cited a laundry list of debunked conspiracy theories after wild meeting and a tense exchange between colleagues.

Chaos erupts at Onkaparinga council meeting

A member of the Salisbury council wrote to her colleagues claiming she had evidence proving popular conspiracy theories including the existence of robots with brain microchips which killed nine people.

Councillor Severina Burner, who has been at the centre of conspiracy-fuelled protests at the City of Salisbury, sent the email to her colleagues ahead of Tuesday night’s meeting.

Among other conspiracy theories, the email claimed the council was submitting to a “new one world government” as part of the “great reset”.

The email prompted fellow councillor Beau Brug to go to drastic lengths to introduce a motion to the Tuesday meeting confirming, “for the avoidance of any doubt”, the council did not support any of the claims within the conspiracy theories.

One point of the motion aimed to dispel one of the wildest conspiracies that Tesla billionaire Elon Musk had not created a microchip he planned to insert into residents’ brains.

During the meeting another councillor, Peter Jensen, said he had been contacted by an elderly resident who told him they feared leaving their home.

He said the resident had read online the council had installed 5G towers with robots in them which would kill or maim people.

The unprecedented motion came as the council battled conspiracies spread within their ranks by Ms Burner and fellow councillor Grace Bawden.

Both Ms Burner and Ms Bawden were elected in November last year after a targeted campaign which involved family members Matilda and Luke Bawden.

Ms Burner seized her position as central ward councillor with less than 800 votes.

Ms Burner on Tuesday delivered a seven-minute speech in which she reiterated her beliefs in the conspiracies.

“Elon Musk has worked on a brain chip, he has one, he’s put it in robots,” she said.

“There are four bots that went a bit funny and as the workers tried to disassemble two of them and they did that successfully.

“As they were disassembling the third one, the fourth one used its AI technology ... to get on the net and find out how to repair itself, and then it killed nine employees.”

She told the meeting she would “rather not have the debt” incurred by smart city technologies and instead “clean the (public) toilets myself”.

Her comments referenced part of the technology which would notify the council of when a public toilet is due to be cleaned.

Ms Burner said she was “very disappointed” in the council for “treating the residents who ... pay the rates”, but were unable to have their voice heard.

Despite Ms Burner’s protestations, Mr Brug’s motion was voted in favour of 12 to 2.

Ms Burner and Ms Bawden voted against it.
