SA not out of the woods yet, with severe weather warnings still in place

Parts of SA have been hit by massive hailstones, heavy rain and flooding – so what’s next?

Giant hail in Adelaide

Wild weather on Thursday morning that caused minor flooding, major damage and golf ball-sized hailstones isn’t about to stop, with more storms forecast.

Senior Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Simon Timcke said the wild weather was caused by significant storm bands moving across the south of the state.

“We’ll get a bit of a break now, but there are still further storms out west which may come through later in the day,” Mr Timcke said.

“There’s still a risk but it’s a lower risk, we’ll continue to update warnings.”

More than a dozen homes north of the city have reported skylights shattered by hailstones, allowing water to enter, the SES and CFS say.

Mr Timcke said the storms that particularly battered the north of Adelaide and Barossa were now heading across the Murray districts.

“Further north, there are some severe thunderstorms right up in the north-east pastoral district,” he said.

As Thursday morning’s wild weather subsided, Mr Timcke warned of potentially damaging winds across the state. A severe weather warning is current.

“As the complex low-pressure system moves south-eastwards later today and overnight, we’ll see more southerly winds move over the south of state, which will bring strong winds themselves.

“We also have gale warnings out for a number of our coastal areas.”

The forecast for Adelaide on Friday is 18C with a shower or two, while the weather on Saturday to Monday will be mostly sunny with increasing temperatures reaching 29C on Monday.

There looks to be more rain heading to Adelaide by the middle of next week.
