Rhys Johns and Jessica Pitt pleaded guilty to drug dealing at Parafield Gardens

A judge has slammed a woman for waiting six months to seek help to save herself from jail after she was caught dealing drugs alongside her “dead end” boyfriend.

A man dealing alongside his girlfriend splurged on a significant amount of meth after an online gambling win, a court has heard.

Rhys Aaron Johns, 30, and Jessica Alice Pitt, 24, faced sentencing submissions in the Adelaide District Court on Tuesday, for their joint drug enterprise.

Police searched Johns’ Parafield Gardens residence on January 7 last year and found 83g of methamphetamine, valued at over $20,000.

Johns and Pitt, both of Parafield Gardens, pleaded guilty to drug trafficking.

Francesco Barbaro, for Pitt, asked for an adjournment to obtain a psychological report.

Judge Liesl Kudelka said it was disrespectful that Mr Barbaro was “completely and utterly unprepared”, despite Pitt’s pleas being entered months ago.

“It doesn’t work like that in my court,” she said.

“If your client has done nothing to help herself in the last six months and now thinks I’m going to wait around for another six months while she decides to do something because she doesn’t want to go to jail, she’s in the wrong court, with the wrong judge.”

Nick Vadasz, for Johns, told the court a quarter of his vision was gone permanently in an injury he suffered during arrest.

“He received that as a result of … the heavy handed use of force in the course of arresting him by Star Force officers in circumstances where he did not provide any resistance to arrest,” he said.

“It’s a matter that this man has very much learnt a lesson … because he would not have received the injury if he had not had a drug problem which led to him being involved in trafficking.”

The court previously heard Johns was smoking up to 3g of meth per day and had an “overwhelming and voracious” addiction.

“He stays at home and smokes drugs,” Mr Vadasz said.

“That has been his dead end life and he recognises that it’s a life of someone who’s destined to get nowhere.”

Mr Vadasz told the court that the amount of methamphetamine found by police in January was significantly larger than what Johns would usually buy.

“In December 2020, he won the amount of $15,000 on online gambling,” he said.

“As an addict he used the money to acquire a bigger amount than he normally would – in anticipation of using it and ongoing sales.”

Johns has also pleaded guilty to trafficking from April 2020, when he was caught with 18g of methamphetamine and 82g of GHB, also known as fantasy.

Judge Kudelka adjourned the couple’s charges until August for further submissions.
