Rhys Johns was denied bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday, charged with three counts of drug trafficking

A drug dealer and his partner have been allegedly caught with a huge amount of methamphetamine – more than 100 times the amount considered trafficking.

Australia's Growing Drug Crisis

A drug dealer who was allegedly caught with 200g of methamphetamine said he had been wanting to start a family with his co-accused before his arrest.

Rhys Aaron Johns, 28, applied for bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday, charged with three counts of drug trafficking.

A police prosecutor opposed the bail application and said Johns was already on home detention bail when he allegedly committed the fresh drug offending.

Police attended Johns’ Parafield Gardens residence on January 7.

“The case is a strong one, we would say,” the police prosecutor said.

“The amount of methamphetamine seized was approximately 100 times the provision of trafficking … approximately 200g.

“His mobile phone found at the scene has been examined and text messages are consistent with drug transactions.”

The court heard there was also fingerprint evidence matching Johns to the alleged drug offending.

“He has prior convictions of drug trafficking,” the police prosecutor said.

Johns, of Parafield Gardens, is charged with three counts of drug trafficking from February 2019, April, 2020 and January this year.

The court heard John’s co-accused, who is his partner, was on bail for the drug trafficking charges from January.

Nick Vadasz, for Johns, told the court his client had strong ties to the state.

“He received quite significant injuries during his arrest,” Mr Vadasz said

The court heard Johns had a swollen left eye, which he believed to be a fracture, and there was a risk of losing vision.

“The injuries were assessed as soft tissue trauma,” Mr Vadasz said.

Mr Vadazs told the court Johns would plead guilty to his drug trafficking offences from April.

“He wanted to start a family prior to his arrest,” he said.

Magistrate David McLeod said Johns’ injuries would likely be suitably addressed in the prison health care system.

“Noting that the offending is alleged to have occurred whilst the defendant was on bail, noting his history of drug offending … bail is refused,” he said.

Johns will be sentenced in the Adelaide District Court in May for the drug trafficking offences from April.

He will also be in court next month and May for the remaining drug trafficking charges.
