Redwood Park man bailed to house near several schools

An accused paedophile’s home detention was approved despite its close proximity to several schools and his alleged victim being of a “very young” age.

The close proximity of his home to several schools was no barrier for a man accused of sexually assaulting a child to be released on home detention.

The Redwood Park man, who cannot be named in order to protect the identity of his alleged victim, on Monday appeared in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court from prison on a charge of having sex with a person under the age of 18.

That charge was laid on the man under the consideration that the “very young” child he allegedly sexually assaulted was under his authority at the time.

Police have alleged the man sexually assaulted the child at a national park in remote Central Australia during a period of three days in July this year.

Magistrate Christopher Smolicz allowed the man to be released on home detention bail under strict conditions.

Those conditions included him being unable to approach any child under the age of 16 or work in child-related work.

He would also be fitted with an ankle monitor.

“The (alleged) offending is extremely serious and involves a very young victim, and the (home detention) report identifies the proximity of a number of schools,” Mr Smolicz said.

The court heard the man had no prior criminal history and a police prosecutor did not oppose him being released to his home.

If found guilty, the man could face a period of 10 years behind bars.

The man was expected back in court in November.
