A mother was caught dealing drugs on multiple occasions while her young daughter was living in the house, a court heard.

Alexis Kate Daniels, 26, is hoping not to give birth to her second child in jail after she turned to selling meth and fantasy to fuel her own habit.

Ahura Kalali, for the prosecution, pushed for immediate jail for Daniels, saying text messages over the course of 10 months revealed she was a persistent drug dealer.

On Tuesday, the District Court heard police conducted a search on December 24, 2019 and found drugs in the wardrobe, which Daniels denied knowledge of.

Ms Kalali said that search didn’t deter Daniels and more drugs were found on June 7, 2020, while her young daughter was living in the house at the time.

Daniels, of Valley View, pleaded guilty to drug trafficking, relating to 3.8g of methamphetamine and was found guilty of a further drug trafficking charge and commercial drug trafficking after a trial.

Carrie Demertzis, for Daniels, told the court her client started using meth when she met her daughter’s father.

Ms Demertzis said it was clear Daniels wasn’t using the money she made from selling drugs to live a lavish lifestyle.

“Ms Daniels instructs that her trafficking in drugs was a combination of fuelling her own habit and indeed covering expenses that flowed from her brother’s death in January 2020,” she said.

The court heard Daniels’ brother was in Queensland when he passed away and there were significant costs in regards to packing up his belongings and paying for the funeral.

Ms Demertzis said Daniels had an interest in pursuing a career in child care and was currently pregnant with her second child which was due in January next year.

“It has not been an easy battle for Ms Daniels, but it is one that she has certainly endured and done, in her own words, primarily for the benefit of her daughter, not so much herself,” she said.

Ms Demertzis said while Daniels now accepted the convictions for trafficking fantasy, it wasn’t unreasonable for the court to sentence her on the basis that she wasn’t alone in that endeavour.

“The fantasy was clearly in the bedroom of her sister and indeed the second lot of fantasy had the DNA of someone else on the mouth of the bottle,” she said.

Ms Demertzis asked the court to suspend Daniels’ jail sentence, saying she was committed to rehabilitation and remaining drug free, having not returned positive drug tests since June 2022.

Daniels will be sentenced in November.
