A meth addicted mother who committed the ultimate act of betrayal on her own sister “sacrificed so much” to get money for drugs.
Kristen Joy Deane, 45, was jailed in the Adelaide District Court last week for her “premeditated, callous” robbery that put many lives at risk.
The court heard the victim was Deane’s half-sister, who is a licensed firearms member of the SSAA Para Gun Club.
She owned five firearms and also stored four firearms for the gun club in a safe.
“You made an arrangement with Mr Watkins for him and another man Mr Henstridge to attend at the premises … to break in and to steal the guns or the gun safes,” Judge Paul Slattery said during sentencing.
The court heard Deane knew her sister and her partner had left for holiday in February 2019 leaving the house in the care of their mother and her sister’s son.
Deane created a ruse of needing help with fixing her motorcycle and convinced them to come over on February 20, 2019.
“In the meantime Watkins and Henstridge attended at the home of your sister and her partner at Para Vista,” Judge Slattery said.
They brought a number of tools, including a saw and a map of the house, where Deane’s fingerprint was found.
“They broke into the home and stole the gun safe containing nine firearms,” Judge Slattery said.
Watkins and Henstridge, who had pleaded guilty to the offending, were identified on CCTV footage which Deane hadn’t known her sister had installed.
“Your phones were examined and there was discovered a series of texts between you and Watkins arranging for Watkins to attend at the premises and to notify you once he was clear of the premises,” Judge Slattery said.
“Of the guns stolen only two have ever been recovered.”
Deane, of Salisbury East, was found guilty at trial of serious criminal trespass and theft.
The court heard Deane, who is a mother, is a methamphetamine addict which was the key factor to her offending.
“You were prepared to sacrifice so much to get money to feed your addiction … your decisions are a tragedy that may have other tragic consequences,” Judge Slattery said.
Deane’s sister said in her victim impact statement that her and her family no longer feel safe in their own home.
“[Your sister] also said that your offending constituted a huge betrayal and has permanently altered your relationship,” Judge Slattery said.
Judge Slattery sentenced Deane to three years and six months jail, with a non-parole period of two years and four months.
“Your offending was premeditated, callous … you were aiding criminal elements in our society most likely associated with the lowest strata of society,” he said.
“You are responsible for nine handguns being circulated into that criminal population, you have put so many lives at risk, starting with the police.”
The sentence was backdated to April 16.
