Kiven Keoheuangpraseut pleaded guilty to trafficking cocaine and meth at Munno Para West

A drug dealer who was sourcing his stash off a notorious gaming app had a “pack of lies” to tell police after he threw a bag of drugs over the fence during a search.

Dark web-based drug deals on the rise

A young dealer who sourced his stash off the exploited gaming app Discord agreed to hold a significant amount of meth in return for cheaper drugs, a court heard.

Kiven Keoheuangpraseut, 22, went on to tell police a “pack of lies” after panicking and throwing the drugs over the fence.

The District Court on Monday heard police found three vials of steroids, methamphetamine and cocaine in a cooler bag during a search of Keoheuangpraseut’s home on June 7, 2021.

Sean Nottle, for Keoheuangpraseut, told the court in July he had ceased drug use and pushed for a suspended or home detention sentence.

Judge Paul Muscat said it was serious offending and Mr Nottle would be “hard pressed” to persuade him to not impose an immediate jail term

“There was a significant amount of methamphetamine and not an insignificant amount of cocaine,” he said.

Mr Nottle replied that Keoheuangpraseut had been a heavy cocaine user and was dealing to a small group of friends.

“He sourced those drugs via the online platform Discord, which is essentially a server group where people make contact with each other and arrange for the delivery of those drugs,” he said.

Originally designed for video game discussions, Discord’s anonymity has been exploited by drug dealers to sell cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine, ecstasy, LSD and other substances.

The app is similar to Reddit and allows users of any age to create “servers”, where communities instantaneously message and share media about any topic.

Instant messaging service Discord hosts hundreds of drug-related communities, where users buy and sell illicit drugs with anonymous usernames.

Keoheuangpraseut, of Munno Para West, pleaded guilty to two counts of drug trafficking and one count of possessing prescription drugs.

“Mr Keoheuangpraseut was … asked to hold that significant amount of methamphetamine for those that he purchased the cocaine from in return for an eight ball of cocaine and the promise of further cheaper cocaine on his next … reload,” Mr Nottle said.

The court heard when police searched Keoheuangpraseut’s home he panicked and threw the drugs over the fence of a neighbouring property.

“There are no tick lists, everything is contained in that Coles freezer bag and this is a striking example of, and pardon the pun, a very low-level dealer left holding the bag for somebody else,” Mr Nottle said.

Judge Muscat said Keoheuangpraseut had told police “a pack of lies” about how he found the cooler bag.

“He claimed that he attended the night before and he noticed it near his car and placed it inside his car, along with his gym bag,” he said.

Mr Nottle said the cooler bag of drugs was delivered to Keoheuangpraseut at a gym car park.

“It was obviously not just found by happenstance by Mr Keoheuangpraseut,” he said.

Judge Muscat will sentence Keoheuangpraseut next month.
